There are a number of points of comparison between the lyrics of the song & themes in the story, such as what moral theologians call dejection. But here is an example of O'Connor's sly humor: The grandmother's departed suitor was named E.A. Teagarden. The trombonist on the Bessie Smith recording of the song was Jack Teagarden.
