Great Books @ The Cambridge Public Library: How do the travel-guide descriptions work with the settings & characterizations?

The travel descriptions remind me of those in the Rough Guide series, and contrast sharply with the stories Adige tells. Yet it is important to remember that the book is set up as a travel itinerary, spaced out over seven days. The descriptions could easily be those used in a guided tour, such as those sponsored by Elder Hostel, which tries to introduce travellers to a particular culture. Adige, then, is functioning like one of these travel guides who are well informed about the culture a group is visiting. Yet even here Adige goes beyond what one could normally expect even from such a guided tour. His tour, as it were, takes the reader inside not just the culture but also the thoughts, the personal lives of his characters. Steven; February 16, 2011 at 3:28 PM
